When faced with multiple options, individuals must continually decide between selecting the option they believe is best or exploring alternatives to avoid missing a better opportunity. Striking an optimal balance between these strategies is crucial, especially in uncertain environments. Yet, the signals guiding this exploration/exploitation trade-off in humans remain debated. One key signal could be the feeling of confidence. Indeed, a central hypothesis is that when individuals feel less confident—believing they may not have the best option—they tend to explore more. In contrast, higher confidence may drive more exploitation. The aim of my project is to precise the role of confidence in the exploration/exploitation trade-off using a Understanding this relationship could shed light on a complex and fundamental human decision-making processes.
