Metacognitive Insight into Latent Parameters Underlying Decisions.

Humans have good insight into the speed and accuracy of their own choices. When they make a wrong choice, participants often sense that a decision was incorrect. Previous research has mostly focused on investigating metacognitive on single trials (“how confident did you feel about this decision”). However, accuracy and reaction time are the result of underlying cognitive computations that depend on specific latent parameters. For example, choices are thought to be under control of parameters controlling the level of urgency, the level of attention, the learning rate, etc. Currently, it remains unclear to what extent humans have metacognitive access to these underlying parameters. I investigate whether participants can estimate these latent parameters and use computational modeling to see whether their subjective reports correlate to model-based estimates of these parameters. I also relate these findings to electrophysiological recordings made during the decision. Results from this project will unravel the boundaries of metacognitive insight.
