Have you ever found yourself trying to juggle different pieces of information when making a decision? Not all of that information is relevant to the task at hand, but unfortunately, our brains don’t always seem to get the memo. Sometimes, the information we are supposed to ignore is exactly what influences our behavior. Think of a suspicious email that immediately draws you toward clicking on a link, while other elements might make you reconsider that initial response tendency. But what actually happens between such a first impulse and the decision we eventually make? This is what sparked my curiosity to learn more about how we control our responses during cognitive conflict. I’m particularly fascinated by computational modeling and the insights such mathematical models can offer into psychological phenomena. This fascination lies at the heart of my PhD research, in which I will investigate how evidence accumulation models can help us to provide a more comprehensive account of response control.
